The Journey That Led Me Here by Kaylie Jensen

MANISTEE, MICH. - When I think about the word “home,” it means more than just where you live. It means the place where you feel connected, welcomed, and inspired to grow. For me, that place is right here in Manistee County.

I recently stepped into the role of Engagement Specialist at the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce. While this may be my first time introducing myself in this space, my connection to this community began years ago, and in many ways this place has come to feel more like home than where I grew up.

I was not originally raised in Manistee County, but my family moved to Michigan during my teenage years. I finished high school here and slowly began building the kinds of everyday connections that shape a sense of belonging. Over time, this community became the place where I grew into myself. It is also where I developed a deep appreciation for small businesses, local stories, and the people who keep everything moving forward.

Throughout my journey, I discovered a passion for creativity, especially in marketing and communication. I have always enjoyed finding ways to share stories, connect people, and highlight what makes a place special. Those interests now shape how I approach my role each day.

As an Engagement Specialist, my work centers around relationships. Some days, that means stepping out into the community by visiting local businesses, attending events, and listening to the people who make Manistee County thrive. Other days, it means working behind the scenes creating communications, sharing updates, and helping businesses stay informed about opportunities, events, and resources available through the Chamber.

What makes this role especially meaningful to me is that it goes beyond marketing. At its core, my role is about connection. I serve as a bridge between the Chamber and the business community, helping strengthen relationships, encourage engagement, and make sure local businesses feel supported and seen. Whether I am promoting an event, sharing a business story, or simply stopping in to introduce myself, every interaction is an opportunity to build stronger connections within our community.

What stands out most to me is how every business has its own story. Whether it is a long-standing family business or a newer venture just getting started, there is always a reason behind it and a person behind it. Getting to hear those stories firsthand is one of the most meaningful parts of my work with the Chamber.

The Chamber’s role is often happening quietly in the background, but it is rooted in connection. It is about helping businesses find support, creating space for collaboration, and strengthening the relationships that help a community function and grow. My role allows me to help bring those connections to life by making sure businesses feel engaged not only with the Chamber, but with the broader community around them.

Outside of work, I find myself drawn to many of the same things that make this area special for so many others. I enjoy exploring local restaurants, spending time outdoors, and taking in the natural beauty that surrounds us. One of my favorite routines is starting my day downtown, enjoying local dining and shopping, then ending my day at one of our local beaches.

At its heart, Manistee County is not just where I work. It is where I have built a sense of home through experiences, conversations, and relationships that continue to grow.

As I continue in this role, I look forward to meeting more members of our business community, hearing their stories, and helping strengthen the connections that make Manistee County such a special place to live and work. If you see me out in the community, I hope you will say hello.
