About the Manufacturers Council

Founded in 2004, MMC is a strong coalition of manufacturing interests in Manistee County. The founding members are:

Council Ideals & Objectives

Continuation of Manistee’s rich manufacturing heritage ensure local economic strength continued stability and growth, with the added benefit of bringing well- paying jobs to the region.  The objective of the council is to be a strong advocate, and voice for area manufacturers with emphasis on:
  • Strong advocate voice for area manufacturers
  • Improved communication with local leaders and the public
  • Improve business-to-business cooperation, sharing of best practices
  • Foster Cooperation
  • Ensure a viable workforce


Martin Marietta currently employs +185 people at the Manistee plant, also
provides Occidental Chemical in Ludington with 100% of their raw material
(indirect employment impact of an additional 120 jobs), and has grown
their export volume to represent +20% of its Manistee output and revenue.

Fab-Lite currently employs 86 people in Manistee with an additional 186 at
our Ludington facility (Metalworks). Fab-Lite manufactures office furniture,
and our products get shipped to all 50 states. Our products are marketed
under our sales organization called Great Openings (www.Greatopenings.com).
In addition, we manufacture products for many large office furniture
manufactures in the industry. In 2016, we purchased and installed a coil
fed laser which is one of the newest types of equipment being used in the
country. In addition, the company celebrated its 50th year of being in
business in Manistee and Mason County.

Morton Salt currently employs 100 people at the Manistee plant. The
Manistee facility produces about 275,000 tons of salt; about 80% of this
tonnage is converted into water softener salt. Morton Salt has been part of
the Manistee community since 1931, and salt has been manufactured on
the site since the late 1800s. The Manistee facility’s customers are
primarily in MI, IN, OH, IL and WI; however, this facility also ships some
specialty products across the entire US and Canada.

Packaging Corporation of America currently employs 333 people at the
Manistee Filer City Mill.  In addition, the employment multiplier for the
forestry and paper industry is 5.6 and 3.6 respectively. The Filer City Mill
produces 1,210 tons/day of corrugated medium which is shipped across
the US to various sheet and box plants to be used in making cardboard. 
PCA’s Filer City Mill is the largest consumer of recycle cardboard/paper in
Michigan consuming 500+ tons daily.  The Filer Mill is certified in ISO9001
and S.F.I. (Sustainable Forestry Initiative).

TES Filer Station currently employs 23 people at the Manistee plant, and
is working on a conversion from a coal fired power plant (60mw) to a NG
fired plant (225mw) facility. The conversion will be complete June of 2019.
